Michael Bedford

Michael Bedford is a Toronto-based oil painter whose figurative and still life paintings explore intimacy, desire, isolation, and the psychological landscape of contemporary life. He uses quick, expressive brushstrokes, focusing primarily on the paint itself as well as capturing the duality of light and shadow. Having studied neuroscience and psychology before becoming a painter, he’s endlessly fascinated with the human psyche, including how we live in relation to others and to ourselves. His work resists spectacle in favour of emotional honesty, and asks how the promise of a more connected world has left many feeling more alone than ever.
